The Most Common Myths About Washing Machines

Your washing machine is one of the most important appliances in your house, so it pays to be informed. That said, there are a ton of myths about them, and these myths can be harmful. If you believe the wrong things about your washing machine, you could find yourself using it incorrectly or putting in unnecessary effort. Learn the common myths about washing machines below.

Myth: You Don’t Need To Clean Your Washing Machine

It’s easy to believe this myth since it seems logical. If your dirty clothes come out clean, then the machine itself is getting washed, too, right? A key misconception is that laundry detergent cleans your clothes and the appliance. This is wrong.

Your washing machine may look clean, but it’s riddled with dirt and grime. When dirt is left behind after each cycle, it builds up in the drum, seal, and hose filter. If you don’t clean those components, your washing machine will smell like dirty clothes and degrade over time. Whip out a dishcloth and start cleaning!

Myth: Front Load Washing Machines Are Better

While front-loading models are excellent and modern, this doesn’t mean that they’re the best on the market. Top- and front-loading washing machines have the same tech and working principles. However, depending on the model, they do have less or more space. Energy efficiency scores might also differ, but for the most part, you’ll be looking at the same function for each washing machine. A major difference is the price point. Top-loading washing machines are generally less expensive than front-loaders at mid-range price points. The idea that front-loading washing machines are always better is a major myth about washing machines.

Myth: Hot Water Is Ideal for All Clothes

Hot water is ideal for some clothes but not all. Water temperature significantly affects your clothes, and for most loads, you’ll want to use warm water. Hot water won’t make garments cleaner except in certain circumstances. In fact, it can damage the texture and cause stains to stick rather than eliminate them.
